FOTD: Birthday Makeup

...I turn 26 tomorrow.  And while I may be old (and also suffering from a head cold).  I'm not too old for purple smoky eyes!

THE FACE

Skin is pretty simple - I used a light moisturizer and then the lightweigh,t but medium coverage, Urban Decay Skin Foundation in Shade 4.0.  I kept the cheeks sheer and monochromatic with a light plum MAC On a Mission Beauty Powder Blush and NYX Matte Bronzer in Medium.  I love really buffing bronzer into my skin. I always take my time when I apply it and really work it in using a large kabuki bronzer brush from Eco-Tools. I work in the stereotypical E3 shape with a touch down the nose and on the cheeks.

THE EYES

I am a big fan of layering products, as opposed to caking them on my face.  I dislike when dark makeup looks heavy, so to avoid that I use a lot of pencil type products to make a darker base and then layer washes of shadow overtop.  Pretty basic skills in makeup-ery, I know.  So, for this look I took Urban Decay's 24/7 Shadow Pencil in Demolition - a nice purple with purple micro-glitter.  I layered this in a HEAVY line above my lashes and blended upwards with a MAC 217 to pull it and diffuse it out towards my crease. In the outerconer of the eye I took a MAC Chromagraphic Pencil in Purple and drew and elogated cat eye shape and blended some more.  To set all the purple, I applied the matte side of the NARS Melusine Duo in the same heavy line I applied the UD 24/7 pencil and blended some more with my 217.  Seriously, if you can blend products really well, you're halfway to mastering most makeup application.  I took a clean MAC 244 and dusted the inner corner of my eye with the frosty side of Melusine.  I then kohl rimmed my eyes with a super black eye pencil, and swept a light line of Demolition under the lashes.  The last thing I did was apply mascara - super black and a ton of it.

THE DETAILS

The lips are Urban Decay's Oil Slick - which is a super sheer black that acts as a tint and darkens the lip color.  I think it anchors the face nicely without going for the typical nude.  Also, concealer is a must in this look.  I used the Garnier Anti-Dark Circle Undereye Roller in Med/ Deep as a color corrector and then used two layers of MAC Mineralize concealer in NW25.  Once before all of the eyemakeup and once after to clean it up.
